The Thermapen is a thermocouple thermometer produced by ETI, Ltd and sold by ThermoWorks. It’s used by restaurants, home cooks, homebrewers, grillers, bbq-ers and more.

Here’s an in depth hands on look at the latest iteration, the Thermapen ONE starting with a history of the Thermapen, accuracy and response time tests and lots more.

History of the Thermapen

The Thermapen was introduced in 1992. The original invention of the Thermapen was by Electronic Temperature Instruments Limited (ETI, Ltd.) of Worthing, England. Each subsequent version of the product has been engineered and manufactured by ETI, Ltd.

Thermapen was the first thermocouple thermometer designed for commercial and home kitchens. Prior to that time all other thermocouple thermometers were designed for science and industry; and were much larger, handheld devices with separate probes. These were generally priced at about $200 or more (after purchasing a probe). Keep in mind that’s in pre-1992 dollars.

WiFi Connection: Your network needs to be using the 2.4GHz frequency. This can usually be checked in the list of available networks on the phone or tablet. Some networks have 2 available options. The 5Ghz band will typically specify "5G" after the network name, while the 2.4Ghz band may have "2G" or no specification at all. If there's only one option, it likely means you have a dual-band router, in which case your MEATER device will automatically connect to the 2.4Ghz band. Your network has to be unhidden. LAN to WLAN Multicast and Broadcast must be enabled. If your router router supports Airtime Fairness, this feature needs to be disabled.
Reliable Bluetooth Pairing Between Block & Probes: MEATER probes pair directly to the Block via Bluetooth, not your phone. For the strongest connection, keep the Block close to your grill, oven, or smoker, as WiFi does not extend Bluetooth range. If the Block is too far from the cooking device, the probes may disconnect. Make sure to place it nearby to ensure accurate temps and uninterrupted monitoring.

The ThermoPro TempSpike is a completely wireless thermometer… no wires! That allows you to wirelessly monitor your cook with compatible smart phone apps. It’s a available in a single probe version and and a dual probe version.

This is a look at the single probe TempSpike. Stay tuned to this post which will turn into a comprehensive hands on review as I become more experienced with this wireless thermometer.

What came with my TempSpike – The probe, case, manual, charging cord and a couple additional pamphlets. Note that a USB charging block is not included, but it will work with any standard USB charger.

DOT is engineered to do one thing really well. Set your target temperature with the up or down buttons, insert the probe in your food, and DOT beeps when it gets there. Simple as that. Hit any button and the beeping stops. The display still flashes till your temperature drops below the setpoint. DOT uses any of the Pro-Series probes designed for our popular ChefAlarm. The included 4.5-inch probe reads temperatures up to 572°F with a cable that withstands 700°F. Designed for commercial food service, DOT beats houseware brands for intuitive usability and survivability.

DOT is designed to track temperatures over an extended period of time with moderate-heat cooking methods such as smoking, oven-roasting, deep-frying, homebrewing, and Sous Vide and to be used while grilling.
